Is it time...

How do you know when the time is right to say goodbye?
Quality of life is our aim
Â
How do you know when is the right time to say goodbye.
In your journey together, this is undoubtedly the hardest question you will ever ask yourself. And the reason you are asking this is because you love them.Â

As lifelong pet owners and vets, we draw on our personal and professional experience to help you decide. We can help you to assess their quality of life and in doing so, explore any other options.. Sometimes the decision is already made for you, and you may just need our support to make the last kind decision for your best friend.

A couple of years ago I said goodbye to my own best friend, Dave after 10 years, which was tough, but was made easier by him being at home. He was by the fire, warm and relaxed, as I let him drift away to sleep.

Being at home allows you to say goodbye to your best friend in their familiar, relaxed place. But being at home is not for everyone, and so when we let our pets go to sleep in our practice, we aim to keep the practice quiet, and it is never rushed. And there will be no pressure, your time together is your own and will be treated with respect.Â
The process explained

Quality of life
Before any decisions are made we will spend as much time as you need discussing their quality of life, which is at the heart of every choice you make for them.
You will not be rushed at any stage of this as we believe in supporting, and not hurrying. We want to make this as calm an experience as we can for you both.
Gentle sedation and nausea injection
If you decide euthanasia is right at that time, we will then give an injection into the skin (same as when they were vaccinated) which will relax them, provide pain relief so they are as comfortable as we can make them, and also prevent any nausea that they may experience from the sedation.
Other options
If you are undecided or there are other options, such as pain relief, or additional pain relief, we will explore this and go through any other options, supporting you in your decisions.
Final pain relief injection
Once your best friend is fully relaxed, and when you are both ready, we will administer a further pain relief injection that is the final step. Once this takes effect, they will fall asleep and pass over.
